Terms of Service
These terms are an agreement between you and Veg Eats (“Veg Eats”, “we”, “us”). They cover the Veg Eats website at vegeats.app, Veg Eats Pro, our emails, and the Veg Eats iPhone app when it launches (together, the “Service”). Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with your information.
The short version
- Our dish verdicts can be wrong. We read public restaurant menus, much of it automatically, and mark each dish as vegan, “ask” or not vegan. Menus change and our reading makes mistakes. Always check with the restaurant, and never rely on Veg Eats for an allergy.
- We are not connected to the restaurants we list. Their names and marks belong to them.
- Veg Eats Pro is $9.99 a month after a 3-day free trial, and renews automatically until you cancel. Cancel before the trial ends and you are never charged. You can cancel online at any time, as easily as you signed up.
- On the web, Pro is sold through Link, Stripe’s checkout service. Link takes the payment, adds any sales tax and sends your receipts, and your card statement shows LINK.COM*. We provide Pro itself.
- Search engines and AI assistants are welcome on our public pages, following our robots.txt. Scraping, bulk copying and extracting our database are not, without our written permission.
- Disputes go first to a 60-day informal step, then to individual arbitration (fees paid by us beyond your share) or small claims court, not class actions, unless you opt out within 30 days (see section 19).
This summary is for convenience. The full terms below are what apply.

1. Who we are
Veg Eats is operated by Veg Eats, 653 Coppertree Ct, Simi Valley, CA 93065, United States. You can reach us about anything, including legal notices, at [email protected], or by post at that address.
2. Accepting these terms
By using the Service you agree to these terms. When you create an account or start a subscription, you are asked to agree to them expressly. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
If you use Veg Eats on behalf of a company or other organisation, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for it, and “you” includes that organisation.
3. Who can use Veg Eats
- Anyone may read the public pages.
- You must be at least 13 to create an account. Veg Eats is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information (see the Privacy Policy).
- To buy Veg Eats Pro you must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live, or have a parent or legal guardian’s permission and have them agree to these terms for you. A parent or guardian who allows a minor to subscribe is responsible for the subscription and the minor’s use of it.
- You may not use the Service if you are barred from doing so under the laws that apply to you, or if we have previously closed your account for breaking these terms.
4. Your account
You can sign up with Google, with Apple, or with a sign-in link sent to your email. Those sign-ins are handled by Google Firebase Authentication; we never see a password for your Google or Apple account.
- Give us accurate information and keep your email address current, because that is where we send sign-in links, receipts, trial reminders and notices about these terms.
- Keep access to your email and sign-in methods secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us promptly at [email protected] if you think someone else is using it.
- One person per account. Do not share, sell or transfer your account.
- You can stop using Veg Eats at any time. To delete your account, open the account menu (your name at the top of any page) and choose Delete account, or email [email protected]. We cancel any Veg Eats Pro subscription you bought on the web straight away, sign you out everywhere, and keep the account hidden for 30 days in case you change your mind (signing in again restores it); after that it is permanently deleted, as the Privacy Policy explains. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple, which you cancel in your Apple settings.
5. Dietary and allergen information: please read this
Veg Eats is a guide, not a guarantee
Everything Veg Eats says about a dish, including “vegan”, “likely vegan”, “ask”, “not vegan” and tags such as gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free or sesame-free, is general information only.
- Where it comes from. We build it from menus and other information that restaurants and third parties publish, read in large part by automated tools, including software and AI models. We do not cook, taste, test or inspect any food, and we do not visit kitchens.
- It can be wrong or out of date. Menus, recipes, ingredients, suppliers and preparation change without notice. Menus themselves can be incomplete or wrong. Automated reading makes mistakes: it can misread a dish, miss an ingredient (for example fish sauce, butter, egg wash, honey, gelatin or animal-based stock), confuse sections or attach a description to the wrong dish.
- It is not a guarantee. A dish shown as vegan, or tagged as free of an ingredient, may still contain animal products or that ingredient, or may be prepared with shared equipment, oil, fryers or surfaces. We make no promise that any dish is vegan, plant-based, or free of any allergen.
- It is not medical or nutritional advice. Nothing on Veg Eats is medical, health, nutritional or dietary advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a doctor or dietitian.
- Always confirm with the restaurant before you order, especially about ingredients and how a dish is prepared.
- If you have a food allergy, celiac disease or any other condition where eating the wrong thing could harm you, do not rely on Veg Eats at all. Speak to the restaurant’s staff directly every time, and follow your doctor’s advice. This applies to Veg Eats Pro filters too: a filter only reflects what a menu says, as we read it.
You use this information at your own risk. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not responsible for any reaction, illness, injury or other loss that results from relying on it (see sections 16 and 17).
If you spot a mistake, please tell us with the feedback buttons on the page or at [email protected]. We read reports and use them to correct the listing, but we cannot promise to fix any particular entry by any particular time.
6. Restaurants, trademarks and third-party information
- No affiliation. Veg Eats is independent. Unless a page clearly says otherwise, we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any restaurant, chain or brand we list, and listing a restaurant does not mean it endorses us or that we endorse it.
- Their names are theirs. Restaurant names, logos, menu item names and other trademarks belong to their owners. We use them only to identify the restaurant and the dish.
- Other people’s information. Some details we show, such as ratings, hours, prices, addresses and map data, come from third parties, who are credited on the page. Some venue details are © OpenStreetMap contributors and are available under the Open Database License.
- Place data credits. Place data from Overture Maps Foundation (CDLA-Permissive-2.0), including Foursquare (Apache-2.0), OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), and All The Places (CC0). Phone numbers, websites, street addresses and opening hours may come from these sources. We do not promise that third-party information is accurate or current.
- Restaurant owners. If you own or manage a listed restaurant and something is wrong, or you want to talk to us about your listing, email [email protected] from an address at your business and we will look at it.
7. Veg Eats Pro subscriptions
Veg Eats Pro is an optional paid subscription. Today it applies your saved dietary filters to menus automatically, saves your preferences to your account, and removes ads from search results. The features can change over time (see 7.10).
7.1 Plans and prices
Veg Eats Pro costs $9.99 a month, plus any applicable tax, after a 3-day free trial. The plan, price, billing period and trial are shown on the Veg Eats Pro screen and again on the checkout page before you pay, and the price you see at checkout is what you will be charged. Prices are set in US dollars; checkout may show them converted into your local currency.
Who sells it. When you subscribe on vegeats.app, the purchase is sold through Link, the checkout service of our payment provider Stripe, which acts as the seller (the “merchant of record”) of the transaction. Link takes your payment, works out and collects sales tax, sends your receipts and invoices, and appears on your card or bank statement as LINK.COM* followed by our name. Link’s own terms and privacy policy, linked at checkout, apply to the payment itself. We provide Veg Eats Pro, and these terms govern it.
7.2 Free trial
- New subscribers get a 3-day free trial. The date it ends is shown before you start and in the confirmation emails you get from us and from Link.
- You need to give a payment method to start the trial. You are not charged during the trial.
- When the trial ends, your paid subscription starts automatically and you are charged $9.99 plus any applicable tax, unless you cancel before the trial ends. If you cancel before it ends, you are never charged.
- We email you a reminder before the trial ends.
- Trials are for new subscribers, one per person. We may refuse or end a trial we believe is being misused.
7.3 Automatic renewal
Your Veg Eats Pro subscription renews automatically. It continues, and Link (Stripe’s checkout service, which sells the subscription) charges the payment method you gave at checkout the then-current subscription price, currently $9.99, plus any applicable tax, at the start of each monthly billing period, until you cancel.
Before you subscribe, we show you: that the subscription renews automatically until cancelled, the price and how often you are charged, the length of the free trial and the date your first charge happens, and how to cancel. Our Pro screen shows these terms right beside the button that starts your trial. On the checkout page you then tick a box agreeing to these terms, which include these automatic renewal terms, and you cannot subscribe without ticking it; the checkout page also states that Link will charge you until you cancel. Straight after you subscribe we email you a confirmation that repeats these terms, the date your trial ends and how to cancel, and Link emails you its own confirmation.
7.4 How to cancel
- Online, any time: sign in, open the account menu (your name at the top of any page), choose Manage subscription, and cancel. It takes a few clicks and you do not have to talk to anyone.
- By email: write to [email protected] from the address on your account and ask us to cancel. We will confirm by email.
- Through Link: you can also cancel a web subscription at link.com, signing in with the email you used at checkout, or by contacting Link support.
- Apple: if you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in your Apple Account settings (Settings, your name, Subscriptions). We cannot cancel Apple subscriptions for you.
You can cancel at any time. When you do, you keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for (or the end of the trial), and you are not charged again. Uninstalling the app does not by itself cancel a subscription.
7.5 Refunds
- Cancel before your trial ends and you are never charged, so there is nothing to refund.
- After that, you can cancel any time and keep Pro to the end of the period you paid for. We do not give pro-rated refunds or credits for part of a month, except where the law requires them.
- If you see a charge you did not expect, email [email protected] and we will look at it with you. Because Link sells web subscriptions, you can also ask Link support (support.link.com); Link may decide some refund requests itself under its own policies.
- If we end your subscription without cause, we refund the unused part of your current period.
- Purchases made through Apple are refunded by Apple under Apple’s policies; request them at reportaproblem.apple.com.
7.6 Price changes
We may change the price of Veg Eats Pro. If we do, we will tell you by email at least 7 days (and, where the law sets a window, within it; in California, between 7 and 30 days) before the new price applies to you, with how to cancel. The new price applies from your next billing period after the notice period. If you do not want to pay it, cancel before it takes effect. Where the law requires your consent to a price increase, we will ask for it.
7.7 Taxes
Prices do not include sales tax, VAT or similar taxes. For subscriptions bought on the web, Link works them out from your billing address, adds them at checkout, and pays them to the tax authorities. Apple does the same for purchases made through the App Store.
7.8 Failed payments
If a payment fails, Link may retry it and we may pause or end your Pro features until it goes through. You remain responsible for amounts due for periods in which you had Pro.
7.9 Buying through the App Store
When the Veg Eats iPhone app is available, you may be able to subscribe through Apple’s in-app purchase. Those purchases are sold and billed by Apple and are governed by Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions, including Apple’s rules on payment, renewal, cancellation and refunds. One Veg Eats Pro subscription, bought on the web or through Apple, unlocks Pro on the web and in the app when you sign in with the same account.
7.10 Changes to Pro
We may add, change or remove Pro features. If we remove a major feature you pay for, we will tell you first, and you may cancel before your next billing date.
8. Ads
Veg Eats is free to use with ads. Free readers may see clearly labelled “Sponsored” placements between search results. Sponsored placements are not dish verdicts and never change a verdict. We do not endorse advertised products, and your dealings with an advertiser are between you and the advertiser. Veg Eats Pro subscribers do not see these ads. How ads use data is explained in the Privacy Policy.
9. Using Veg Eats properly
You agree not to:
- break any law, or use the Service to infringe anyone’s rights;
- send false, misleading, abusive, hateful or spam feedback, or try to manipulate the votes or reports that help us correct verdicts;
- impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your connection to a restaurant or to us;
- upload viruses or harmful code, or interfere with, overload or disrupt the Service or the networks that run it;
- try to get into accounts, systems or data you are not allowed to access, or probe, scan or test our security without our written permission;
- get around any paywall, limit or feature restriction, or share Pro access outside your own account;
- use the Service in any way described in section 10.
10. Crawlers, AI, and no scraping
Our listings, verdicts and the database behind them took a great deal of work to build. We want people to find them, including through search engines and AI assistants, and we do not want them copied wholesale.
10.1 Who may crawl our public pages
The search engines, answer engines and AI crawlers named with an allow rule in our robots.txt may crawl our public pages (the home page, city pages, restaurant pages, the cities list, and these legal pages) to index them, show and cite them in search results and AI answers, and, for the model-training crawlers named there, to train AI models, as long as they follow robots.txt. That permission is limited to the crawlers named there, to the public pages, and to what robots.txt allows; we can change the list at any time by changing robots.txt. Ordinary browser features and accessibility tools acting for one person reading a page are fine too.
10.2 What is not allowed
Except as 10.1 allows, or with our written permission, you may not, and may not help or allow anyone else to:
- scrape, crawl or spider the Service, or use any robot, script, automated or headless browser, AI agent or other automated means to access, query, copy or monitor it;
- access the data behind the pages, including the data files, map tiles, page shards and API routes the site loads, by any automated means, or download, copy, harvest or extract data in bulk (dish verdicts, dish and menu listings, venue lists, map data or search results), whoever you are;
- extract or re-use all or a substantial part of our database, or build, supplement or offer a competing or substitute database, directory, dataset, app or service, or sell, license, publish or redistribute our content;
- use our content in a dataset for training AI models, other than as 10.1 allows for the named crawlers, or reverse engineer our data or methods, for example by systematically querying the Service to reconstruct our database, verdict rules or rankings, or decompile our software except where the law expressly allows it;
- get around rate limits, session tokens, access controls, CAPTCHAs, bot protections or blocks, including by rotating IP addresses or user agents, using proxies to hide your identity, or disguising automated traffic as a person, or pretend to be one of the crawlers named in robots.txt;
- frame or mirror the Service, or remove or alter any copyright, trademark or attribution notice.
10.3 Our rights reserved
We reserve all rights not granted in 10.1, including our copyright in the selection and arrangement of the Service and any database rights, and, to the extent the law allows us to (including under Article 4 of the EU Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, 2019/790), all text and data mining rights in our data files and APIs, as our TDM reservation states. We may block, rate-limit or challenge any automated traffic, and any permission you had to access the Service ends automatically if you break this section. We may take legal action to enforce it. To license our data or crawl us for a purpose not listed here, write to [email protected].
11. Our content and database, and your licence to use them
The Service, including our dish verdicts and tags, our text, design, software, the Veg Eats name and logo, and the selection, arrangement, compilation and structure of our database, belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by copyright, database, trademark and other laws. Individual facts, and content that belongs to others (such as a restaurant’s own menu wording, and the OpenStreetMap data described in section 6), are not claimed as ours.
We give you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the Service for your own personal, non-commercial purposes, such as deciding where to eat, in line with these terms. You may share links to our pages and quote an individual verdict with a link back. Everything not expressly granted is reserved.
12. Feedback and other things you send us
You can send us votes, corrections, notes, reports that a place has closed, and other feedback (“Feedback”). You keep any rights you have in it, and you give us a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free licence to use, copy, change, combine and publish it, in any form, to run and improve the Service, without paying or crediting you. Today we use Feedback to review and correct listings, and we do not publish notes you write.
Only send Feedback you have the right to send. Please do not put personal information, yours or anyone else’s, in a note. We may remove or ignore any Feedback.
13. Copyright complaints
We respect copyright. If you believe something on Veg Eats infringes your copyright, send a notice to us at:
Copyright Agent, Veg Eats
653 Coppertree Ct, Simi Valley, CA 93065
[email protected] (subject line “DMCA”)
Your notice must include: (1) your physical or electronic signature; (2) the copyrighted work you say is infringed; (3) the material you say infringes it and where it is on Veg Eats (the URL); (4) your name, address, phone number and email; (5) a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law; and (6) a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner.
If we remove material because of a notice and you believe that was a mistake, you can send a counter-notice to the same address with: your signature; the material removed and where it was; a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake or misidentification; and your name, address and phone number, and your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your district (or, outside the US, any district where we may be found) and to accept service from the person who sent the original notice. We may pass a counter-notice to the person who complained. We close the accounts of repeat infringers in appropriate circumstances. Knowingly false notices can lead to liability for damages.
14. Other sites and services
Veg Eats links to and relies on services we do not control, including restaurant websites, map and directions apps, Google and Apple sign-in, Stripe and its Link checkout for payments, the Apple App Store and, for free readers, advertisers. Their own terms and privacy policies apply to your use of them, and we are not responsible for their content, products or practices.
15. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or close your account, or block your access, if you break these terms, if we must do so by law, or to protect the Service, other users or us. Where it is reasonable, we will tell you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. If we close your account without cause, we will refund the unused part of any Pro period you paid us for directly. Sections that by their nature should survive (including 5, 10, 11, 12 and 16 to 23) survive termination.
16. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service, including all dish verdicts, tags, filters and other information, is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, accuracy, completeness and timeliness, and any warranty that a dish is vegan or free of any allergen or ingredient, or that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free.
Some places do not allow some of these disclaimers, so some may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that cannot be limited by contract.
17. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law: (a) we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising out of or related to the Service or these terms, even if we were told they were possible; and (b) our total liability for all claims arising out of or related to the Service or these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or US$100.
These limits apply to every legal theory (contract, tort including negligence, product liability or otherwise). They do not limit liability for our fraud, gross negligence or wilful misconduct, for death or personal injury caused by our negligence where the law does not allow such a limit, or any other liability that cannot be limited by law.
18. Indemnity
To the extent the law allows, you will defend and indemnify us and our owners, employees and agents against third-party claims, and the losses and costs (including reasonable lawyers’ fees) that come from them, arising from your breach of section 9 or 10, Feedback you send us, or your violation of any law or of anyone else’s rights. We will tell you about the claim and may take part in the defence with our own counsel.
19. Disputes and arbitration
Please read this section carefully. It affects your rights, including your right to go to court and to take part in a class action. You can opt out of it (19.8).
19.1 Talk to us first
Most problems can be fixed by talking. Before either of us starts an arbitration or a court case, the one with the complaint sends the other a written notice describing the dispute and what they want, and we both try in good faith to resolve it informally for 60 days. Send yours to [email protected] or to Veg Eats, 653 Coppertree Ct, Simi Valley, CA 93065; we will send ours to the email on your account. Limitation periods are paused during those 60 days.
19.2 Binding individual arbitration
If it is not resolved, any dispute, claim or controversy between you and us arising out of or relating to these terms or the Service will be resolved by binding individual arbitration, not in court, administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules then in effect. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this section. A single arbitrator decides, by documents, video or phone or, if in person, in the county where you live. We pay all AAA filing, administration and arbitrator fees beyond the consumer’s share that the AAA Consumer Rules set (and beyond what you would have paid to file in court, if that is less), unless the arbitrator finds your claim frivolous or brought for an improper purpose. The arbitrator can award the same individual relief a court could, must follow these terms and the law, and gives a written decision.
19.3 Small claims court
Either of us may instead bring an individual claim in small claims court, in your county of residence or in Ventura County, California, as long as it qualifies and stays there.
19.4 Other exceptions
Either of us may go to court for an injunction to stop infringement or misuse of intellectual property, or a breach of section 10 (scraping and automated access).
19.5 Public injunctive relief
Nothing in this section stops you from asking a court for public injunctive relief (relief whose main purpose is to stop unlawful practices that threaten the general public) where the law gives you that right, including under the California Supreme Court’s decision in McGill v. Citibank. Such a claim is decided in court, after any individual claims in arbitration are decided, and is paused until then.
19.6 No class actions
You and we may bring claims against each other only individually, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any class, collective, consolidated or representative action. The arbitrator may not consolidate claims of different people or award relief to anyone other than the individual party.
19.7 Mass filings
If 25 or more similar demands are filed against us, or by us, by or with the help of the same lawyers or organisation, they are administered in batches of up to 25 (one arbitrator per batch), under the AAA’s Mass Arbitration Supplementary Rules where they apply. Fees are assessed per batch where the rules allow, and limitation periods for claims waiting in a later batch are paused. Either side may ask a court to enforce this clause.
19.8 Your right to opt out
You can opt out of this section 19 by emailing [email protected] within 30 days of first accepting these terms, with your name, the email address on your account, and a clear statement that you opt out of arbitration. Opting out does not affect any other part of these terms or your account.
19.9 If part of this section fails
If the class action waiver in 19.6 is found unenforceable for a claim, that claim (and only that claim) goes to court, not to class arbitration, and never proceeds as a class, collective or representative action in arbitration. If any other part of this section is found unenforceable, the rest of it still applies.
19.10 Changes to this section
If we change this section, the change will not apply to a dispute we already knew about, and you can reject it by emailing us within 30 days of the change, in which case the earlier version applies to you.
20. Governing law and courts
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and applicable US federal law, without regard to conflict of law rules. For anything not sent to arbitration, you and we agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in Ventura County, California, except that you may bring a claim in the courts where you live if your local law gives you that right. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country and may bring proceedings there.
21. Changes to the Service and to these terms
We may change the Service at any time. We may update these terms; the date and version at the top will change. If a change is material, we will tell you in advance by email or a notice on the site, and, where required, ask for your agreement. Changes apply from the date stated, and never to disputes that arose before it. If you do not agree to a change, stop using the Service and cancel any subscription before it takes effect. Older versions are available on request.
22. Apple App Store terms
This section applies when you use the Veg Eats iPhone app downloaded from the Apple App Store (it is not available yet). These terms are between you and us only, not Apple, and we, not Apple, are responsible for the app and its content. Your licence to the app is a non-transferable licence to use it on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. If the app does not conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) for the app; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for it. We, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and consumer protection, privacy or similar claims, and for investigating and resolving any claim that the app infringes a third party’s intellectual property. You confirm you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and, once you accept them, Apple may enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
23. General terms
- Entire agreement. These terms, with the Privacy Policy and any terms shown to you at checkout, are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service and replace any earlier agreement about it.
- Severability. If a court or arbitrator finds part of these terms unenforceable, that part is changed as little as needed to make it enforceable (or removed), and the rest stays in effect.
- No waiver. If we do not enforce a term, that does not mean we give up the right to do so later.
- Assignment. You may not transfer these terms. We may transfer them, for example if our business is sold or reorganised, and will tell you if we do.
- Events beyond control. We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by things outside our reasonable control.
- Notices. We may give you notices by email to the address on your account or on the site. You give notices to the contact details in section 24.
- Relationship. Nothing in these terms makes us partners, employees or agents of each other.
- California users. Under California Civil Code section 1789.3, California users are entitled to the following notice: the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs can be reached in writing at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by phone at (800) 952-5210.
- Language. These terms are written in English. Any translation is for convenience, and the English version controls where the law allows.
