'Masked Harvester' is the label for de Moor wines from sourced fruit; the wines are made in the de Moor cellar in Courgis in the same manner as their estate wines. The Vendangeur Masqué Chablis comes from 2 clay-limestone parcels totaling 1.1 hectares of Chardonnay The fruit is harvested by hand, destemmed, gently pressed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in tank. The wine goes through malo and is aged on its lees without bâtonnage or racking in a mix of enameled-lined steel tanks and used barrels for close to a year. Bottling is without fining or filtering and is the only point at which a touch of sulfur is added to the wine

Fabien Dauvissat, son of Jean (no, not that Jean Dauvissat) has made some radical changes in his father's considerable Chablis domain. His father was first and foremost a grape farmer. On over 50 acres and 53 different parcels ranging from Petit Chablis to Premier Cru over seven different communes, he produced quality grapes for a big negociant house. His son Fabien had different ideas seeking to produce not just good Chablis, but great Chablis. He has taken the domain organic, using only copper and sulfur, no weed killers, no chemical fertilizers, no systemics and vinifies each plot separately in an array of of vessels, including tank, clay jar, and dynamic set of casks based on parcel size, vine age, each with their own purpose and intention. Heritagé is a cuveé of plots planted between 1951 and 1963

Chavy wines are organically farmed and vinification follows methods traditional all the way to the labels on the bottle, dignified. From his prime holdings in the village of Sankt-Aldegund from average vines of 60 years, ungrafted and on steep slopes. As the label indicates this wine is a calling card for Blue Slate (Blauschiefer), rocks pulverized into liquid form with a brisk and beautiful acidity. Totally dry or “Trocken”

The final addition from our 2023 visit to the region, this was one of Lauer's most serious wines from our tasting. Pronounced aromas from white blossoms and a cold stream waterfall are met with rippin' acidity that balances out a generous amount of sugar leaving you with a balance on the palate that describes the region's relationship with sugar and the style of Lauer. 'Is this a dry wine or is it a sweet wine?' is the riddle of Florian's grandfather's estate and while that may be forever up for debate one thing that is for certain, Lauer's wines are precise classic elaborations of Riesling from a single vineyard in the Saar

Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach are two of the most adorable German riesling farmers you could lay your eyes on. They work a miniscule 1 hectare of parcels across famed Mosel vineyard sites like Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen, and Kinheimer Rosenberg. One of the last refuges where Pradikät wines taste like they did ages ago, the vines are even on original rootstock averaging over 45 years in age. Each parcel is vinified separately in 1000 liter fuder each numbered with its different parcel. Sweet like you would expect from Auslese the acid is integrated here and tertiary notes are just now starting to become apparent

Bone-dry, assembled from 120+ year old ungrafted vines, it's refreshing and smart with a little body from sitting on lees for a year. This is a slow drinking thinker not for everyone and certainly not a quaffable and refreshing Grüner. Expect structure, minerals, and salinity holding up an undulating cornucopia of nuance and mystique. Peter Veyder-Malberg is well beyond organic or biodynamic production and surely his time spent cultivating positive working relationships with the insects or conversing with mushrooms and microorganisms that live in the root systems of his vines, contribute to the wonder of his wines

Whilst this iconic rosé never ceases to impress, this might be one of the best yet. The grapes come from a fifty year old parcel of Aleatico planted some five hundred meters above sea level and are pressed directly and aged in a combination of old barrels and porcelain amphorae. Reflecting the freshness of the vintage, this is pale, nuanced and whistle clean, offering delicate notes of minerals, blood orange and rose

Delicate winemaking and painstaking farming renders a balanced, fresh, juicy take on the grape when so many others are astringent and difficult. Grignolino has more seeds per grape than any other varietal, which is primarily where the tannins come from. The bouquet is ample and refined, with aromas of violet and gladiolus

Previously most known for this local indigenous grape variety, Verduno is the town and namesake of this old estate. Gabriella Bulottio single handedly saved this ancient variety from extinction. Basdone or little kisses is gemstone ruby color with orange highlights. It exhibits subtle but elegant aromas that flit from crushed leaves to dry red cherries and floral notes. It is deliciously fine bodied with a sustained, quintessential Piedmontese finish

I am a sucker for maps and when a winemaker whips one out to show you their holdings. Giovanni, one of the 3 people who make Roccheviberti, is proud to show off his small but unique estate in the middle of Barolo. Bricco Boschis is one of 2 sites the winery produces. It is a southwest exposed amphitheater of undulating vines that is exhibiting driving white pepper, violet, red cherry and dried rose petals mixed with bitter chocolate cinnamon and licorice. The palette is full bodied as any Barolo but more elegant and forgiving than the usual suspects

At the base of Castiglione Falletto is this ridge vineyard that basically falls off on the south east slope into a steep ravine. Wine from this site is discrete and mineral driven. With some patience, aromas of fruit and spice waft around but are so nuanced and metamorphic they are easily missed. Structure takes precedence here and could use some delicious food to round out its edges

100% Sangiovese Grosso from a single vineyard. “Piantata” is the name of the parcel of Sangiovese, where in ancient times the Olivetan friars cultivated the vine married to the mulberry tree, the so-called “piantata”. Arianna's only DOCG wine, in this case Vittoria's most famous, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a blend of the best native varietals, Nero d'Avola and Frappato. "Grotte Alte" is named for the limestone ridges on which the Occhipinti estate lies, straddling and combining both Mediterranean and mountain influences, with red and sandy clay soils over limestone at about 280 meters. Coming from a selection of older vines, a longer maceration and barrel aging, the Grotte Alte is essentially the "grown-up", appellation-designated version of the "baby" SP68 red IGT wine

While Château de Saint Cosme is the benchmark estate of Gigondas, Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992, adding a négociant arm to the business in 1997. He simultaneously made a dramatic shift to quality, by converting to biodynamics in 2010. This wine is lighter across the board than much that comes from the esteemed vineyards of Côte-Rôtie. It leans on more minerality than ripeness, It’s layered, ethereal, exquisitely balanced and an absolute joy to drink

Just opposite the storied hills of Hermitage in Saint Joseph this mythic & masterful producer created Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet in 1993. In a micro-climate cooled by the Black Forest, Hans-Bert Espe and Silke Wolf farm a couple of hectares with little regard for big yields. Thoughtfulness in the vineyard takes precedence at Shelter where it is ok to make only a little bit of great wine. The N114 and namesake of the winery comes from a Canadian air base bunker where the couple first made wine. It is made from the smallest bunches of the oldest vines in their Nordweil vineyard planted with dijon clones in 1971. The wine is delicate and shadowy and may take some time to unwind but even Hans-Bert will admit it is the best wine they have made

We sat down with Manuel “Manu” Michelini this spring and were delighted by his energy as much as we were by his wines. At 28 years old he has already participated in 30 vintages, (in both hemispheres as he was born in Mendoza), and his inspiration is compelling like a breath of fresh air from northern Spain. This single variety wine is from one plot planted in the 1960s called Las Ginebras, situated on top of silty powdery calcareous sands and is the highest elevation Grenache found in the region

The variety make up is interesting as it is a reflection of the variety make up of the plot. This is the ancient tradition and remnant in Rioja, each plot rooted with red varieties in the middle surrounded by a small percentage white varieties as perimeter. Everything is vinified plot by plot in concrete with indigenous yeasts. 40% foot trodden whole clusters layered on top of uncrushed grapes, fermentation, then aged in 225 - 2000 Liter foudres for 10 months. The plots are blended together and rest for an additional 10 months in concrete, thus 20 months all together

Casa Aurora is named lovingly, after the legacy set forth by winemaker Germán Blanco’s great-grandmother, Aurora Garcia. Besides planting vineyards, making wine at the home of the village priest, Aurora became the first female in the region to work at the local coal mine. Germán is committed to rehabilitating the vineyards his great-grandmother planted and bottling each as an individual expression of their location. Gemstone color, layers of aroma, concentrated minerality and great balance, this wine left me speechless in the thrill of tasting something lost. Clos Rougarad is one of our favorite wines which we no longer are allocated. Adrien and Guillaume Pire have crafted something akin with Reserve du Pigeonnier but from flinted, gravel and clay rather unique from the limestone that the region is known for. The organically farmed fruit is picked sur-maturité, (when grapes start to shrivel and acid levels fall) then ferment for 3 weeks before spending 9 months in barrel. A medium pronounced nose of savory meaty notes with blown white pepper and even olive all lend to a balanced mouthfeel of acid and tannin while red fruits pop out

This is from the first biodynamically farmed vineyard in Bourgogne sitting 421 meters above sea level in the higher elevations of Cotes de Beaune. The aromas are concentrated expressing the darker red fruits and the body is a little taut and reserved showing some spicy notes and a sustained finish

Whether it be Geverny or Nuits Saint George this wine is often pumped up to being compared with burgundy. I think a lot of that is to develop interest in a region that is now already world renowned and maybe a little unnecessary and redundant for such a unique Pinot. El Barberon from Lias clay and comes in with tart aromas from red cherry, cranberry, and cracked pepper. The palate has nice acidity and structure

The work at Tissot is all in an effort to deliver you a unique wine and not just from year to year, from bottle to bottle. Industrial production kills an individual bottle's identity and that is why the domaine is cultivated through biodynamic viticulture producing wines specific to each terroir. En Barberton is a west facing clay soil slope that kindles some stunningly exquisite wine

Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged 12 months in french oak, (20% new) this is Chardonnay from a clay hillside located below the village of Menetru-le-Vignoble. Tissot purchased this parcel in 2007. "En Sursis" translates to "on borrowed time" as Tissot will continue to produce this wine as long as the vines continue to give him grapes, but when the day comes that the old vines no longer yield fruit, he'll likely replace them because in this particular terroir, Savagnin is king

A next level expression of the variety, this Jacquère is slightly reductive with lemon grass aromas, wisps of cilantro and jalapeño once on the palete. The body is thirsty with acid rich structure that will have you quenching your thirst with more. Mathieu and wife Camille, work 100% manually on 4.5 hectares of land in the village of Saint-Baldoph below the imposing Massif de Chartreuse. I forgot about Bordeaux for many years in an attempt to avoid chemicals and headaches from chapitalisation and new oak. Leave it to Neil Rosenthal to introduce a winemaker that bucks the status quo of modern farming and still delivers classic wines. Chateau le Puy is a bit of an anomaly as Jean-Pierre Amoreau and his son, Pascal oversee the biodynamic farming and winemaking techniques forgotten by most in the region. The estate sits at the second highest point on the plateau and is a mix of highly acidic clay, silex and limestone. The “elevage” of wines is done according to the lunar rhythm and the red cuvées are raised in barrel for 24 months, neither fined nor filtered before bottling

We were already impressed by her wines when Rosalind Reynolds visited for 3rd Coast Soif but we wanted to meet her face to face to get a glimpse of what she has going on in Sebastopol. Rosalind works closely with Pax Mahul at his facility he lends to Martha Stoumen, Patrick Cappiello and Carlo Mondavi. She is the master of logistics there, which is like spinning plates during harvests when she orchestrates receiving fruit for 5 different winemakers coming from scores of vineyards. I got the impression that her hard work for Pax gives her a special insight for what works best and access to some of the choice fruit. Her wines come from mostly dry farmed vineyards, fermented with natives yeasts, foot trodden, and vinified without filtration. Emme’s namesake is a nod to her grandmother. Each wine is treated as a unique creation even if she repeats the same elevagé from one vintage to another. From Pine mountain vineyard this fruit was handpicked by Rosalind and her partner Alex for whom th

On the ridge 500ft above Occidental sits one of the most truly coastal vineyards in California. Heintz has a strong maritime influence, great diversity in soil types and coastal fog moving directly through the vineyard during the growing season. Michael Cruse would buy this place if you gave him a winning lotto ticket and the Syrah he made from there definitely makes him deserving of such a windfall. Nobody could call him a phony. Cooling earth, black fruit preserves and pepper shaker greet you in the most polite ways. The body is balanced across the board until a bright acidity takes over the finish

Half from the Napa Valley floor and half from their esteemed Howell Mountain Estate. The 21 vintage was quick to ripen from a hot June producing a smaller crop. Cooling red and blue fruited aromas were expertly coaxed out of this precocious vintage. Howell Mountain is an ancient volcano with red loamy soils that produce unique ethereal wines when the vineyards are well kept. Mike Dunn and his top sales person, bojangles, his enthusiastic pit hound the same color as the soil, lead the tour around the estate vineyards. This was a mainstay on our BTG list for almost a year and we thought it would be nice to keep a few bottles around. Eden Rift Vineyard is located in the Hollister Hills and sits on the San Andreas fault line about 20 miles west of Monterey. The soil is mineral rich and farmed without the use of pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. The fruit is destemmed, fermented from native yeasts and aged in neutral oak for 8 months. If you know about Ridge you probably have heard about the Montebello Vineyard and how it is synonymous with the Judgment of Paris and subsequent competition 30 years later. Ridge Montebello came in 5th beating all the other french reds in 1976 and was first place in 2006. One thing that is often overlooked about this juggernaut bottle is it is actually a ‘natural wine’ in that it is made from hand harvested, organically grown fruit let to ferment from yeasts native to the vineyard and winery. Oak is more prominent than terroir here as the wine is structured for a decade or two of aging. 2020 started out mild, prompting an early bloom which was followed by heavy spring rains that ultimately inhibited the harvest size. Then steady summer fog allowed for a slow ripening. The winemaker assures us this vintage is a classic

This is Rosalind's first time making a wine solely from what the vineyard owner, Aki, calls Muscat Vert. The grapes are more aromatic than the Colombard, Chardonnay or Chenin she works with but less audacious than the almost unmistakable Muscats out there. The first aromas are reminiscent somewhere eastern like Alsace and after a long finish turned west to Loire and Muscadet. It is gentle in aroma and delightful on the palette with a nice long finish

Hill takes this fruit very seriously; it's from the second oldest Chardonnay vines in California planted by the Lolonis family four generations ago in 1945. When she visited Webster's, Clair shared some of her winemaking technique of browning the wine, almost inoculating it with oxygen, to protect it from premature oxidation a.k.a. 'premox'. 100% Trebbiano Dorata (a dialect of Toscana, propagated on the farm for generations). So impressed with this wine and so little was made we had to add it to the list, albeit expensive, there is a treat yourself opportunity here. Think steak au poivre as this 2020 vintage is rich and lively and deserves a meal. It is lighter colored with deft preciseness of aroma and palette showing more fresh notes than secondary. Pierre Amillet’s expertise with chalky terroir and passion for blanc de blanc are apparent in this multi vintage cuvée dating back to 2006. One of the last wines ever made by acclaimed sparkling scientist Michel Salgues, there is a story here equally as charming as what is in the bottle. Riley O’Neill Latta works some rented plots of vines in Southern California and also buys fruit from various farmers around California that share his vision for growing in a natural and regenerative manner. This wine, s4a, is a conferment of syrah from Mendocino and apples from Santa Cruz county. This blend of wine grapes and apples is a beautiful distillation of Latta’s style and winemaking ethos: freewheeling and experimental but with a clear vision to achieve a purity of expression for the fruit. After the creation of the Cheverny AOC the Puzelat’s became one of the first examples of customers trusting the estate’s work methods over the appellation itself as many of the varieties and cuvée they produce buck the AOC’s rules
Marc Ollivier is a titan when it comes to producing an incredibly complete Melon de Bourgogne. While this is his last vintage before retiring to the North Coast, due to some catastrophic vintages, it will be the last we see for a few years. Take full advantage with a big plate of oysters!
I hate to be a broken record, but there's just not enough Labet anymore. However, Neil Rosenthal, the legendary importer that introduced the US to another legend, Jacques Puffeney, is incredible at finding the next great winemakers in Jura. The Morin's Savagnin is fermented "sous voile" so expect those brown butter/nutty flavors with intense acid you know and love!
This version of Malvasia is known for its aromatic profile showing off ripe orchard fruit, honey, herbal and salty notes, high acidity, and long finish. Vinya la Plana refers to the vineyard Pepe farms organically and the wines he ferments in concrete aging on lees for added complexity. It's a concentrated and refreshing wine
60 Months on the lees and all the usual suspects here. Beside the addition of a little Monastrell, what sets Recaredo apart from Gramona and Raventos is the mousse. It is soft from a freshly opened bottle creating a beautiful body and mouthfeel as the layers start to peel away into aroma. There is minerality, fruit and acid but in way more subtle shades than other producers
